Winter CSA

We were sad to see the end of our garden this fall and so, Sean and I thought it would be great to join a winter CSA. Luckily, a neighbor of ours works very near one in ME and offered to pick up our share when she picked up hers at the Wolf Pine Farm CSA. We were surprised tonight when she stopped by with a box loaded with an array of beautiful organic veggies. Here is an example of the share:

Finn thought is was really fun and he enjoyed pointing out all the veggies he knew the names to:

There was one mystery in the crop. I think I have narrowed it down to kohlrabi? Which is very exciting as I have never had it.

From the picture, the mystery vegetable also looks like it could be celery root or celeriac ?? Interested to see what you make with it. We are going to do a CSA with an organic farm near Ft. Collins next summer for fruit, I'm super excited.

I second what Mimi said...it is a celeriac. We love celeriac - great flavor with the consistency of any other root veggie. we use ours a lot like any other root veggie, and have found them to be a great addition to pot roasts and even gratins. we also like to shread them and use them as a crust to a quiche. i have a whole bunch of celeriac recipes if you're interested.

your CSA loot looks AWESOME, btw. large quantities of all the good stuff!! how often will you get them through the winter cause i could imagine that it could be hard to get through all that? we just signed up for our winter CSA last week- will be the second year we've done it through the winter. our "summer" share ends just before thanksgiving, so we'll start with the winter just after that. we love it!

This year was our first experience with a CSA and we're hooked. The CSA we joined this summer does not do a winter CSA, so we had to try something else. Our winter CSA through Grant Farms delivers once a month in Dec, Jan, and Feb. I would love to get cranberries from a CSA, but I don't think there are too many bogs in Colorado.

Thanks, everyone! Yep, definitely celeriac. We had planned a stew for Saturday, so that is perfect. I just ordered a books called Asparagus to Zucchini. It is specific to CSA type veggies and gives recipes and storage tips. You can get it through localharvest.org.

We get a winter share every 3 weeks, for 24 weeks. So, 8 shares total through April. It is pretty great.

And, yea, the cranberries are a big perk. They include in each share some sort of "treat" like cranberries or blueberries or maple syrup. It is definitely nice to be in New England for that stuff!
