Chicken News

The chickens are 18 weeks today!  So, we are officially on egg watch as the books I have say they will start laying between 18 and 22 weeks.  Some friends down the road got their first eggs at 20 weeks, 2 days.  It will be exciting.  And, it has been awhile since I talked chickens on the blog, so here is a little post of chicken news.

First, we are down to one rooster.  A neighbor up the street had to get rid of his rooster and was in the market for another one.  Since we had two and we didn't want to get the hens stressed with multiple males about, we gave up one.  It was quite difficult to decide which had to go.  While, we haven't really become attached to most of the hens, the roosters had a special personality.  Sean and I loved Cogburn's beautiful feathers, but he was on the small side and while we didn't tell him, he had a very crooked tail!  Remi is not as colorful, but he is bigger and struts a bit more and does have a perfect tail, truth be told.  In the end, Finn decided for us.  He didn't want to give up "Remi Timmi."

Also, chickens are, hmm, well chicken when it comes to kite flying.  Here they are all worked up when we ran past them with a kite and Remi is in full crow:
Remi is very puffed up and letting us know he will not tolerate these terrifying flying objects:
In anticipation of the upcoming laying, the chickens have some nice new nesting boxes:
Finn was super excited to help Sean fill them with pine shavings and had to show his chickens exactly what was happening:
And, try to put them in, much to their dismay:

And, here is a picture of Sean holding Finn holding a chicken:
