Egg-static

We got our first egg today!  It was laying right in the middle of the pine shavings in the coop.  We are at 22 weeks and 1 day.  Go, chickens, go!  We spruced up their nesting boxes and can't wait to see more.

wow! that's great! and a nice size too. i thought the breed you had was supposed to lay blue-ish eggs? how far do they roam? not sure our neighbors would be thrilled with chickens in their yards?

Hi Mandy - They can actually lay eggs a variety of colors from pale blue to dark blue, to various shades of green and a few light brownish/pink eggs. I guess we got the brownish/pink first. I think that if given the opportunity, they can range a long ways, but ours when let out have stayed quite close to our place. They have gone into my neighbors garden, but the way our lot is set up their yard is very close in the back. Luckily, our neighbors are not put off by this at all. We have a really nice fenced in run for them though and they are more than happy in there. They do seem to like to roam around our wood piles for bugs and such. We have a very open yard so we don't have to worry too much about predators other than hawks. They have only been let out twice both times due to wind blowing down their pen door. I have seen online where sometimes people only let them out of their pens close to dusk so they get some ranging time but not enough to go to far. I guess it will be trial and error. You could look into chicken tractors.
