Breast feeding is definitely an individual choice and preference, but for me the financial benefits alone are rather persuasive. however beyond that I feel the natural, organic process I have the privilege of sharing with my son is irreplaceable.
I was just happy to read her articulating some of the thoughts that real women may have. I felt guilty not being able to nurse Rachel but that was nothing compared to the attack of strangers and professionals alike when they found out I was not nursing. I had the author's playground experience several times. It was awful!! These women did not even know my situation and yet they felt as though they could judge my parenting. As someone who has both nursed and bottle fed it was a very interesting read. It comes down to doing what is right for you and your family personally, regardless of what anyone else says. Thanks for sending it my way!
Gina said what I was trying to say much better. I feel very blessed to be able to nurse Soren but always knew there was the possibility it may not have been what was best for him. Even down to when and how to ween is so personal and I find it to be quickly judged by other moms. Ironically, as a nursing Mom I was a minority at the hospital Soren was born at which I found surprising.
I can definitely see the pressure in many situations to breast feed. I have also read on mom's boards women who receive zero support for breast feeding. I think it is very much a personal choice and everyone's situation is different. But, boy, this woman lost me when she likened breast feeding to keeping women down as the vacuum cleaner did. Wha?!?
As a breast feeder from an earlier generation I agree with Gina and Mimi. To me the key was what the author says at the bottom of the second page. Breast is probably best but bottle feeding doesn't deserve a reputation as the next health menace. It's important to be informed and to do what's best for you, your baby, your family and your situation. And you should be supported in your decision by those who are important to you.
