Predaceous Chickens

It has been awhile since I did a chicken post.  They are doing great in their coop and run and remain a wonderful activity for all of us through out the day.  In the morning, when Sean takes Lily out, he also opens the door to the coop for the chickens to go in their run.  Then, after breakfast, Finn and Josette and I go out to water and feed the chickens.  We make sure they have water and feed in the coop.  Then, Finn goes in to get the waterer out of the run and he will sprinkle some feed and pet and and hug the chickens while Josette and I clean out the waterer and refill it.  Then, the fun begins.  Throughout the day as we can we go around the garden and collect Japanese beetles (invasive species that eats up the plants) and stinkbugs (stinky critters that are laying eggs and eating up our pumpkin and squash plants).  Then, to much amusement we feed these bugs to the eager chickens who now come running to the fence whenever we are out.  Yep, don't trust anything advertising "vegetarian-fed chickens."  Chickens are very much omnivores and love pecking about and eating a variety of invertebrates.  Garden pests, be warned!
