We may be nuts....

I don't know why, but I am a bit obsessed with foraging.  The idea of just picking food out of nature is so appealing.  So, I end up trekking my family all over the neighborhood to collect whatever we may find, and when we find something good, we must collect it in excessive quantities.  Really, you just can't let those things go to waste!  So, when I saw black walnuts falling to the ground and not being collected in one of our neighbor's fields, I said, we need those!  Luckily, our neighbor was more than happy to let us have them as they are notoriously difficult to hull.  So, here are the kiddos collecting with me:

Now, that should yield a good amount of walnuts.  They are drying now and I will do a post as soon as we get to cracking:

Another wonderful nut in our vicinity is the super yummy chestnut.  They are falling off some trees on the side of the road on one of our walking routes.  We collected as many as we could this weekend.  They are easy to get to, but they are incredibly prickly:
We got a good 5 cups:
Oven roasted and a little salt, they were so good!  Then, I made a pizza with pumpkin, fresh sage, and roasted chestnuts that was divine:
